A Hoarder’s Existence

“A dedicated poem in appreciation to Jack, Jess and Stacy”

A hoarder’s residence is not a home,
It’s an unhealthy space and a lived-in danger zone,
Stuff piled high that could topple and fall,
A daily mental struggle to exist at all.

Bags, books and one time ‘must haves’ cover the floor,
There’s no clear path through from door to door,
Years of buying and throwing nothing away,
Has left you living in this nightmare every day.

Too ashamed to let anybody in,
You go into panic mode if the doorbell rings,
Meeting with friends at their house or another venue,
Knowing inviting them back to yours is impossible to do.

You desperately need help, but you are still buying more,
That ‘feel good’ buzz is what you are yearning for,
But that is short-lived and becomes another thing for the heap,
A never-ending circle you just cannot beat.

Finding the right help and guidance for you,
Needing someone to listen and give practical help too,
Realising how traumatic the process will be,
With an understanding of hoarding and a built-up trust is key.

‘Respect My Stuff’ ticked all the boxes for me,
What a fantastic team they were proven to be!
Well on the way to a home once again,
Carrying on the journey with our re-trained brain.

I want to sincerely thank the very helpful, non-judgemental, organised, friendly and professional team at Respect My Stuff who did an excellent job to support my son in dismantling and disposing of his accumulated litter hoard. Worth every penny and a huge relief to me, his mum, with ongoing support and signposting, making this a very valuable service that deserves much wider recognition. Very grateful to this company and thus a heartfelt, honest testimonial of their worth.

We have availed of training provided by Jack on several occasions. On each occasion we have found Jack to be knowledgeable, professional and above all respectful of the client group in mind. Jack has a lovely training style, relating and adapting to the needs of those in the room. His wealth of experience and continued passion for those living with hoarding disorder continues to be inspiring. Thank you Jack for your time, energy and support.

The Scottish Frontline Network organised two training sessions with Jack for frontline workers in Scotland who support people at risk of or experiencing homelessness. The trainings were extremely popular and sold out in less than 24 hours and feedback afterwards was really positive.

"The different examples of how people hoard and reasons why was really useful as I could apply it to a lot of people I've worked with. The distinction between hoarding and clutter was really helpful too, to understand when it is a mental health problem."

"The time flew and it was very engaging which can sometimes be hard online."

All participants reported a marked increase in their understanding of hoarding after the session, and the handout documents were really useful as well.

This is a testimonial from Sarah Davies, Operations Manager, Magna Housing, following a marathon seven day back-to-back series of (half-day) training sessions for their customer facing colleagues.

In November Magna Housing invested in 165 colleagues attending a ½ day training session with Jack Moore of Respect My Stuff to learn about all things safeguarding. The exciting part of this training was that it was externally delivered by an industry expert and was delivered to support and inform those colleagues that attended about the importance of reporting safeguarding and the complex nature of such an emotive topic. Those colleagues that attended the sessions praised Jack for his professionalism and his encouragement for them to contribute to the sessions and his ability to engage them in learning. The sessions Jack hosted also lead to some improvements in Magna’s processes and a greater awareness of such an important topic.

Feedback from the colleagues who attended was positive and one great comment which sums up the feedback - ‘Jack - he is amazing, incredibly knowledgeable and a really great trainer’

I have been involved in the Multi Agency Support Hub in Antrim and Newtownabbey since its inception and the issue of hoarding was something that came up often and had been difficult to resolve. I was curious to find a sustainable solution to the hoarding cases we were working on as they often impacted so many aspects of someone’s life.

I first met Jack from Respect My Stuff when he delivered one of his excellent ‘Understanding and Tackling Hoarding’ training sessions in Belfast. As a result of that training session I initiated the development of a multi-agency Hoarding protocol for Antrim and Newtownabbey – the first of its kind in Northern Ireland. I was delighted in mid-2021 to learn that Jack had started a Dehoarding service for Northern Ireland, following on from the success of his community interest company in the south west of England (Dehoarding South West CIC) as practical interventions for hoarding were difficult to source.

As a multi-agency group we managed to secure funding for Respect My Stuff to take on some of our highest profile hoarding cases. These cases had been going on for years with a variety of unsuccessful interventions. At Respect My Stuff Jack has a team of trained dehoarding practitioners who have delivered phenomenal results, which have made a real difference to the lives of those involved.

With Jack’s help and guidance, we also started the first Hoarding Support Group for Northern Ireland. These monthly meetings are well on target to become ‘user-led’ by mid-2022.

I have no hesitation in recommending Jack as one of the foremost hoarding specialists in the UK and his training, dehoarding service and hoarding support groups are a long overdue resource for tacking hoarding in Northern Ireland.
